The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has said he has a target of 9,000 electric taxis to be active on the capitals streets by 2020. Speaking at Transport For London's board meeting, Khan made a blunder when he made the claim that the target was 6,000 electric cabs to be in operation by the end of this year, but a spokesperson for City Hall later said that Khan had "misspoke".
According to a report in City A.M, there are currently 40 licensed electric taxis operating in London, with sales figures around the 300 mark. Last week TaxiPoint covered Sadiq Khan's unveiling of 100 rapid charging points. The network includes 51 points for use by taxis and is part of the Mayor of London’s bid to improve the capital’s air quality, by helping phase out the use of diesel and encouraging the use of zero-emission vehicles.
